Let x represent the number of dimes and 5x represent the number of nickels.
Let $3.15 = 315 cents
Then the total value : 10x + 25(5x) = 315
which simplifies to : 10x + 125x = 315
which simplifies to: 135x = 315
which simplifies to: x = 3
Solutions: 3 dimes and 5(3) = 15 nickels
